Cleaning Micrfiber Couches Code X

by Felicia Williams

If you purchased a microfiber couch with a tag that says it’s a code “X,” more than likely you don’t have children or the sofa does not get heavy usage. A couch with a code X tag means no liquid cleaners; the couch can be dry cleaned only.

For those of you who are determined to use a liquid cleaner on your microfiber couch (which is not recommended), test the liquid on a small area. Find a small inconspicuous area on the back or underside of your sofa to test the liquid cleaner. After testing a small area of the couch, dab the area dry with a white cloth and allow the area to air dry. You may soon find out exactly why couches labeled code X are not to be cleaned with liquid cleaners.

Dry Cleaning Microfiber Couches - Code X

There are three options when it comes to cleaning Code X microfiber couches.
  • Vacuum the couch. Vacuuming will remove the surface dirt, crumbs and debris, but will not remove stains.
  • Use dry cleaning solvents. There are several “dry clean” products on the market. If you’re adventurous you can give them a whirl. Products such as Host Dry Carpet Cleaning Kit (it has everything you need in the kit) and Vacuum microfiber code xCapture Carpet Dry Cleaner (purportedly removes dirt, odor and allergens) are options. As with any cleaning product always follow the manufacturer’s directions and test it on a small area before cleaning the entire couch. If the product cleans the small area satisfactorily without damaging the microfiber, then proceed with cleaning the rest of the sofa.
  • The third option is to hire a professional upholstery cleaning service to clean your couch.
The trick with microfiber couches is to check the label before purchase. Families with young children and pets should avoid microfiber couches with an X tag. A couch with an S/W tag provides more cleaning options for those unavoidable stains and spills.
