Little Giant – Pool Cover Pump
by Felicia A. Williams
I now have a new toy that has become the object of my affection. It’s not actually a toy, but anything that makes pool maintenance easier I call a toy.
I’m late in opening my pool this year because I have a host of other projects on my plate. During the offseason, the pool cover accumulated quite a bit of liquid and leaves. Last year between siphoning water and leaf removal, I was exhausted. I never wanted to go through that again so I sought an alternative.
Enter the Little Giant Pool Cover Pump
I ordered the Little Giant model PCP550. It’s quite small. It’s slightly larger than my hand. When I opened the box I thought, “Great, I’ve just wasted fifty bucks on a wannabe pump.”
Fully expecting to connect one of the pool hoses to the pump, I was taken aback when I realized it connected to a ¾” garden hose. Sheesh! A ¾” garden hose to remove a winter’s worth of melted snow will never work!
Boy, was I wrong!
Pumping Water - Set It and Forget It
The Little Giant Pool Cover Pump did the job quietly and efficiently. It was so quiet that I had to double check the other end of the garden hose to make sure water was coming out. It was, and with full force too.
The removable intake screen does a great job of preventing leaves from clogging the system. With so many leaves at the base of the pool cover, I just knew I would have to constantly stop the pump, clean the intake screen, replace it and start it again, but I was wrong (again).
It ran all day without having to clean the intake screen. My pool is a 28’ round with lots of standing water. It took a couple of days to get all the water off the cover, but I wasn’t in a rush. I had quite a few other projects to keep me busy.
Future Pool Cover Tactic
In the future, I’ll run the Little Giant during the offseason so that it won’t have such a monumental job to do when it comes time to open the pool next year. It’s quiet motor and ease of use makes maintaining a dry pool cover easy.
Fifty dollars well spent!
